Research has shed light on the negative and costly impact lack of land use training has and how adversely poor planning decisions affect communities in terms of resources, finances, and quality of life. When planning officials have the right resources and can make educated land use decisions, financially and environmentally costly errors are prevented.

It makes sense that Michigan State University, the nation’s pioneer land-grant university, would spearhead a national citizen training initiative in land use to change the way decisions are made in our communities. It has the history. It has a commitment to advance knowledge to transform lives. It has the infrastructure to launch an Internet-based program successfully. It has powerful curriculum—an outgrowth of collaboration among policymakers, practitioners, planning professionals, researchers, and university educators—and MSU has built the most effective and time-efficient land use training for citizens in the country.
