Preserving Community History

Buildings Photo

“Preserving the hometown atmosphere of this community was our main goal when joining the planning commission in 1988. The Citizen Planner program provided us with the necessary methodology to accomplish this goal.”
--Michael Bailey and Janine Saputo
Oakland Township, Michigan

Oakland Township planning commissioners Michael Bailey and Janine Saputo were focused on preserving their community’s history. The two showed unwavering commitment to that goal by joining in a communitywide effort to relocate the historic Flumerfelt barn and rebuild it using traditional 1879 construction methods. Their participation in the Citizen Planner program armed them with the knowledge and the tools they needed to help develop a master plan that preserves resident values and historic resources while still meeting the development needs of their community.
