A New Paradigm

Buildings Photo

Working with partners and neighbors, communities can develop multi-jurisdictional strategies that create jobs, preserve natural resources, keep them globally competitive, maximize eco-system services, retain intellectual talent, and grow a knowledge-based economy. Growing such an economy depends on offering a mix of urban, suburban, and rural opportunities across communities and regions. Attracting the necessary talent and knowledge requires supporting lifestyles that bring fulfillment.

The Michigan State University (MSU) Land Policy Institute recognizes the importance of creating a new land use planning paradigm of educating citizens, to ensure that they plan well for your state’s future. Citizen Planner, an MSU Extension program within the MSU Land Policy Institute, was established to build capacity among community leaders. Originally funded by the People and Land (PAL) Program and by W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Citizen Planner has trained more than 3,000 local officials in its first four years.
